About ENGR/EnFile
ENGR web was established in 2008 as a platform for engineering technology exchange. Through the Internet, it provides users with services such as news and article browsing, image browsing, software services, online message posting, and discussions.
We have been developing the enfile archiving system since 2011. EnFile is a purpose-built electronic archive system built around a custom virtual file system, for people who care about preserving files, photos and their metadata permanently.
Where EnFile Began
EnFile grew from a simple, persistent pain: standard folders, photo viewers and archiving tools split your files and their metadata apart. Photos lose GPS and EXIF after copying; custom XMP annotations are locked inside individual files; archives become messy, unsearchable piles with no consistent hierarchy. Existing solutions either push your data to cloud servers, or treat metadata as an afterthought.
We set out to build a local-first archive tool: one that keeps every file, tag, category and descriptive property together, inside a single secure container. What started as a personal project for long-term photo and document preservation evolved into the EnFile you see today, built around our in-house virtual file system.
Not Just Another Image Viewer or Zip Archiver
Most file tools handle files as separate items. EnFile treats the archive itself as a managed space. Inside one archive container, you can store any file format, organise deposits in nested categories, attach tags, read and write full XMP sidecar metadata, preview thumbnails, and open content with your favourite external Windows applications.
It does not re-invent how you edit files. Instead, it wraps your existing workflow in a controlled, persistent archive layer — while protecting the whole container with AES‑256 encryption when you need it.
Our Design Principles
- Local-first by default: Your archives stay on your own storage. No mandatory cloud sync, no forced upload of your private photos or documents.
- Metadata is first-class: EXIF, GPS, IPTC and custom XMP attributes are not bonus features; they are core to how EnFile organises your records.
- Native Windows workflow: Built around the familiar ribbon interface, clipboard operations and drag-and-drop you already know.
- Longevity over convenience: We prioritise stable, readable archives designed to survive decades, not just the latest online service.
- Open file access: You retain ownership of your content. Archives are containers, not locked silos.
The VFS Engine That Powers It
At the heart of EnFile is our proprietary Virtual File System, built with layered architecture and multi-level data caching. This engine makes it possible to browse, filter and preview hundreds or thousands of deposits smoothly inside a single archive, without unpacking everything to disk. It enables hierarchical categorisation, persistent tagging, consistent thumbnail generation and reliable sidecar XMP read/write for nearly any file type.
This is not a wrapper on top of existing open-source VFS libraries. The stack is custom-built specifically for long-term electronic archiving and metadata preservation.
Who Uses EnFile
- Fine art, documentary and landscape photographers who need to preserve EXIF, GPS and custom XMP notes
- Archivists and researchers managing mixed collections: scans, raw documents, notes and media
- Private collectors building permanent, password-protected offline archives
- Windows power users who want one organised container instead of hundreds of scattered folders
- Teams that need offline, encrypted archives without relying on third-party cloud platforms
Our Promise to You
We will never treat your archive content as our asset.
EnFile is designed for ownership: encryption stays local, metadata stays attached to your deposits, and your archives remain fully under your control. Our development focus stays fixed on stability, compatibility, and faithful preservation of your files and their associated metadata.
